OUR STORY

The History of Doors Unhinged

Doors Unhinged began as an idea in the early-2000’s as founder and CEO Andrew Ellsworth worked on commercial construction projects during his time as an architect, green building consultant and environmental health advisor.

Onsite at the demolition of office parks, universities, hospitals, banks, retail stores and elsewhere, he witnessed pristine, heavy-duty, barely-used doors being ripped from their frames and tossed into Dumpsters, headed for the landfill.

In the midst of all that “waste,” Andrew saw opportunity. In 2018, he turned that vision into a reality. Doors Unhinged kicked off inside his home office, quickly expanded into a warehouse, then grew to an even larger warehouse where we’re headquartered today. Once word got out about what we do, the doors started coming in quickly. We currently have over 700 doors in inventory, and are frequently locating new inventory.

You'll find us under the same roof as our partners at Construction Junction in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Give us a call to schedule a warehouse tour and check out the latest products in stock! Reach out to schedule an appointment!

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Our Vision

We launched Doors Unhinged with three goals in mind:

  • Put to use some of the vast quantity of high-quality commercial building materials destined for the landfill;
  • Demonstrate the viability of our B2B reclaimed materials business model; and
  • Create market conditions to allow similar enterprises to launch and thrive.

For Doors Unhinged to truly thrive, we recognize the need for there to be many more businesses like us that can collectively normalize material reuse and grow it beyond a boutique business.

We envision a future where an entire ecosystem of material reuse enterprises serve the commercial sector. That ecosystem will cover everything from market intelligence systems and brokerage houses to installation and warranty services.

We see a network that spans many material types, works in all geographies and becomes more than one or two niche businesses. Instead, this envisioned ecosystem will serve as a significant supplier of building products to the construction sector.

But the challenges are very real. The well-worn pathways of the construction industry can be difficult, yet not impossible, to change. The supply of reclaimed commercial building products is seemingly infinite (32 million tons of renovation debris end up in the landfill every year, just in the US!). But the level of demand for these products is approximately zero.

No customers means no enterprises, no waste diversion, and no carbon reduction.

To break this chicken-and-egg dilemma, our founder, Andrew Ellsworth, convened several collaborators to develop the All For Reuse initiative. AFR seeks commitments to “buy reclaimed” from large property owners (government agencies, colleges and universities, and large corporations) to consider reclaimed materials on future projects.

Using the power of the pocketbook, signatories will push their design and construction teams and consultants to work through the process of incorporating reclaimed products. Doing so will help to acclimate other players in the value chain to this new approach.

Once demand for reclaimed products is apparent, stakeholders in the ecosystem, including Doors Unhinged, All For Reuse and any other entity that’s inspired to join forces with us, will catalyze the market’s development and infrastructure.

Together we will bring about environmental benefits, create a green workforce and generate community wealth through a true circular economy.

It’s hard to tackle large, systemic problems, but we thought doors were as good a place to start as any. We’re excited to see what lies ahead for this nascent industry, and sincerely hope that you will become a part of it.

Meet the Founder

Andrew Ellsworth is Founder & CEO of Doors Unhinged, the first US company to sell reclaimed commercial doors systems. With a background in sustainable enterprise development, LEED consulting, and healthy high-performing schools, he launched Doors Unhinged as a solution to controlling unsustainable material waste that results from construction renovation projects.

Andrew shares his commitments to circular economy, community investment and zero waste principles regularly at national conferences; most recently at the International Living Future Institute’s Living Future 2021, Reuse Minnesota in 2020, BSA Embodied Carbon 101 Series and Carbon Positive ’20.

He hopes to inspire more businesses to enter the commercial building material reuse ecosystem. He helped to spearhead All For Reuse, a nationwide organization made up of architecture, construction and sustainability collaborators pushing the industry to change how commercial buildings are designed and constructed.

Andrew served for six years on the board of Construction Junction, a local material reuse nonprofit, and volunteers regularly as an environmental health advocate, food rescue volunteer and kids’ soccer coach. Andrew has a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University, and lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two children.
