The Roundhouse at Hazelwood Green

Owner: Almono LLP

Tenant: OneValley

Architect: GBBN

Contractor: PJ Dick

The Space:

The Roundhouse at Hazelwood Green is an award-winning renovation of a 19th Century steel mill located in Pittsburgh's Hazelwood technology corridor.

Now a coworking space for technology and innovation workers, the Roundhouse has offices as well as an open work station center, conference rooms, event space, kitchen and lounge areas.

Architect GBBN won a first-place award for adaptive reuse by Retrofit Magazine in 2021 for its work on the stunning industrial renovation.

Doors Unhinged was pleased to be chosen as the door vendor for the project, providing reclaimed materials to outfit 49 openings, which prevented 5.2 Metric Tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the air, and diverted 2.3 Tons of 'waste' from entering the landfill.

Baker Hall 160

Owner: Carnegie Mellon University

User: Department of Modern Languages

Contractor: Waller Corporation

Architect: NEXT Architecture

The Space:

Baker Hall 160 houses offices used by the staff of Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) Department of Modern Languages. Baker Hall itself is a 1900's style academic building with faculty offices, lecture halls, classrooms and more, located on CMU's Pittsburgh campus. The owners decided to renovate in 2021, with sustainability, ease, speed and cost-savings all top-of-mind.

CMU chose Doors Unhinged to outfit eight of the Department's office openings with reclaimed doors, frames and hardware.

Doing so diverted 1K pounds of high-quality material from entering the waste stream, and prevented the release of 1 Metric Tonne of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Fulton Commons

Contractor: Mondragon Construction Corp.

Developer: Botero Development

Architect: Midland Architecture

The Space: A former public school building reconfigured into beautiful, co-working offices and a commercial kitchen, located in Pittsburgh's historic Manchester neighborhood. Doors Unhinged sourced and installed reclaimed office, emergency exit, closet and restroom doors, along with reclaimed matching hardware. This allowed our partners at Botero Development to stay on budget, fulfill their goal of supporting local innovation, and divert nearly 2 tons of high-quality materials from the landfill. By choosing reclaimed, the Botero team avoided generating carbon emissions that result from new manufacturing. And with an atmosphere that brings together old and new, the space offers its professional tenants a progressive culture--reminding them every time they walk through the door--that Fulton Commons is a place of ingenuity that’s helping to drive the circular economy.

Projects
Second Harvest

Architect: Rothschild Doyno Collaborative

The Space: Retail thrift boutique, meeting space and community center located in the Sharpsburg neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Our partners at Second Harvest are driving the circular economy in the retail/clothing/home goods sector and also providing essential community connection for local residents. In keeping with the nonprofit’s progressive, cost-conscious business model, the team at Second Harvest were looking for reclaimed materials to stay on budget and also to align with their mission throughout its renovation of a former film developing facility operated by ColorTech. Doors Unhinged met those needs by providing and installing doors at the space for staff offices, employee work areas, restrooms, closets and customer changing rooms. By going reclaimed, Second Harvest and its Board saved money, diverted 960 lbs of materials from the waste stream, prevented the release of carbon emissions associated with new manufacturing, and fulfills its mission of reuse each day.

Contemporary Craft

Contractor: Jendoco Construction

Architect: GBBN

Owner’s Representative: Dunham REGroup

The Space: Internationally recognized and celebrated arts, events and community education center located in Pittsburgh's historic Lawrenceville neighborhood. Contemporary Craft’s mission is to honor diversity, build community and provide support for local artists. It relocated from its prior home in The Strip District in 2019 and began work on renovating this space, a former trophy and plaque manufacturing facility, in 2020. Keeping sustainability top of mind throughout the project and beyond, the organization’s leadership chose energy efficient lighting, heating and ventilation systems, along with salvaged, reclaimed wood for furniture and doors, as well as for hardware and signage, allowing the building to achieve LEED Silver certification. Doors Unhinged provided high-quality, reclaimed doors and hardware for the center’s exhibition, studio, office and support rooms. In doing so, Contemporary Craft diverted ~1 ton of materials from the waste stream, avoided generating another 1 ton+ of CO2 emissions that result from new manufacturing, met its goal of creating a sustainable building and stayed on budget throughout the project.
